For more than 90 years, visitors to Steuben County have been greeted by the "Soldiers’’ Monument in Downtown Angola. Built in 1917, Columbia, the heroic-sized figure that stands atop the 7-foot high monument, holding a flag and a wreath of peace, commemorates the men who fought in the Civil War.The thriving Downtown Angola is always bustling with activity. Various community-wide events are hosted downtown—an area lined with a host of gift and antique shops, galleries, professional services and restaurants. It has served as a hub of business and commerce for more than a century, and, as the county seat, the home of both City and County Governments. Downtown is also anchored by Cameron Memorial Community Hospital and Trine University. In May of 2008, the City of Angola adopted a master plan for the improvement of Downtown Angola. The Downtown Revitalization Plan calls for improved access and mobility in the central business district of Angola, with a redesigned public square and improved streetscape and sidewalk infrastructure. The City is currently in the design phase as it raises funds to begin the revitalization efforts.
