Auburn, commonly referred to as “Home of the Classics,” was incorporated in 1849 as the Village of Auburn and officially became a city March 26, 1900. Charles Eckhart was responsible for the building of the library and the YMCA building. The Auburn Automobile Company was founded in 1900 and produced its first automobile in 1903. In 1933 John Dillinger and others robbed the Auburn Police Department taking guns and ammo. Auburn is also home to the Auburn Cord Deusenberg Festival held each year over Labor Day weekend. Auburn has been the home to many notable people including two U.S. House Representatives, James Farley and Charles McClellan; track and field champion Don Lash, and Major League baseball player Rollie Zeider.
